Life Cycle Assessment for Taiga Concept Oy
Taiga Concept is a Finnish provider of diverse soundproof space solutions. Taiga’s product range caters to diverse office space requirements, encompassing phone booths, personal workstations, co-working areas, conference rooms, and even larger modular solutions up to 28 square meters.
Due to existing environmental awareness and increased customer inquiries regarding product sustainability Taiga wanted to map out the environmental impact of their products. Our Sustainability Specialists helped Taiga Concept to achieve this.
Starting point and goals:
- To find out the environmental impact of their products, Taiga Concept seeked out assistance and knowledge of ways of calculating and communicating the results.
- By engaging with our experts Taiga soon found out that the best solution for them would be to conduct a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) following the guidelines of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 and use the results for an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) that would comply with ISO 14025.
- The aim was to assess multiple products and use the results for overall sustainability development at Taiga Concept.
- In order to achieve credible sustainability related development routes, the project aimed for good data quality for the LCA and EPD.
- In order to publish the results in EPD platform recommended by our experts, The International EPD System, a qualified third-party verifier was also to be selected based on our recommendations.
Results and benefits:
- Taiga received easily updateable data-inventories, LCA report, EPD documentation and ultimately Comatec helped Taiga publish their EPD’s in the International EPD System.
- The first milestone of the project was the successful LCA conducted for one product which already provided valuable environmental impact knowledge for Taiga Concept regarding their products.
- The LCA process was easily duplicated between multiple products and all agreed products (Lohko Box 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and Lohko Box Picea) were assessed in-time and under-budget.
- Comatec’s team also arranged a sustainability workshop for Taiga concept during the project to educate Taiga personnel about sustainability communication, life cycle thinking, LCA results and how to use EPD’s.
- The compliant LCA report and EPD documents were verified together with Miljögiraff.
”From client’s perspective, the investment was worthwhile for the simple reason that it has made sustainability a priority topic within our organization and increased our understanding of sustainability in a business context. Whilst the positive sales impact has already been felt across the organization, the really exciting impact of the LCA process has been the way that it has opened our eyes to areas of weakness within our supply chain and material selection. We have gained insights that will allow us to substantially reduce the impact of our product over the coming years. Though we may have originally approached the EPD process from an external, marketing perspective, the impact that this newfound understanding will have on our product development will be the true legacy of the project.” – R&D Team, Taiga Concept Oy
