Comatec has been collaborating with the nuclear waste management expert Posiva for over a decade, primarily in the development of equipment used at the final nuclear waste disposal facility. Our long-term projects are now at a turning point, as the manufacturing stage of the Canister Installation Machine (CIM), the Buffer Installation System (BIS) transfer device and the transport container is now complete, and the devices have been moved to Posiva’s premises for operational tests.
Comatec is involved in the individual device tests as well as device combination tests.
– Operational testing has gone very well, says Comatec Engineering Manager Andrei Kotliar.
Further tests will be carried out on the devices to ensure their interoperability and the functionality of the final disposal process. The devices are largely automated, which makes inspecting the interfaces between them particularly important. All devices must work seamlessly together for a smooth and efficient final disposal process. Some functions have now been fine-tuned based on test results. Users have also provided valuable information on their experiences, helping us with the further development of the equipment.
The tests are led by Posiva and carried out with several partners. Comatec is for its part responsible of planning and implementing the tests as well as planning necessary any further development needed. The user responsible for the devices is Posiva, whose task is the final disposal of nuclear waste in the bedrock of Olkiluoto at a depth of approximately 430 metres.
