Design of conveyor lines for a pulp mill woodyard

Comatec designed the conveyor lines for the woodyard of one of the world’s largest pulp mills. This conveyor design is the largest single conveyor project undertaken in the company’s history. ANDRITZ commissioned Comatec to design and supply the machinery to its customer in Asia.

Starting point and goals:

  • design the conveyor for the pulp mill woodyard and the related peripheral equipment
  • the conveyor design was also closely linked to the strength calculation of steel structures and the product development of new components
  • some of the conveyors differed in width from those previously manufactured by ANDRITZ, and their peripheral equipment, such as tension drums and folding drums, had to be designed from scratch

Results and benefits:

  • the conveyor system was designed from the log feed to the soda recovery boiler supplied by ANDRITZ
  • the total length of the conveyors is about 11 kilometres, with the longest single conveyor being about a kilometre long
  • the delivery also included a 60-metre-high crossing station for the distribution of wood chips
  • material flow modelling was used to simulate the flow of material in the hoppers, distributors, and conveyor to conveyor at the intersection
Comatec’s insight into conveyor design was key to achieving the project's objectives. Another positive aspect of the project was the amount of resourcing that Comatec was able to provide for such a large project and with such a challenging schedule. The post-project management of the project has also been excellent. – Manager Jarkko Järvinen, ANDRITZ
