Ferry L-198’s upgrade into a battery-powered hybrid ferry

Built in 1994 at the Uudenkaupungin Työvene Oy shipyard for Finferries, ferry L-198 has undergone an extensive mid-life upgrade, during which it has been converted into a battery-powered hybrid ferry. This change is a significant step towards greener and more sustainable ferry services and confirms Finferries’ commitment to developing environmentally friendly transport. The vessel was renovated by Oy HL-Metal Ab in Pansio, and Comatec Group carried out the electrical design related to electrical installations.

The ferry L-198 started its scheduled service between Nauvo and Korppoo, Finland in May 2024.

Starting point and objectives:

  • Very fast implementation timetable (construction period less than 5 months).
  • The aim was to create electrical plans related to electrical installations for Oy HL-Metal Ab.
  • Comatec was responsible for the electrical manufacturing design related to all subsystems of the vessel.

Results and benefits:

  • The new hybrid technology was implemented, and all electrical systems were completely renewed.
  • Comatec has extensive electrical design experience of a variety of vessel types, and the electrical design experience was utilized in this fast-track project.
  • The renovation of the ferry was completed according to a tight schedule.

Main dimensions of the vessel:

  • Length 49,0 meters
  • Width 12,3 meters
  • Draught 3,6 meters
  • Deadweight 130 tonnes
  • Vehicle capacity 36 passenger cars
“Oy HL-Metal Ab completed the project in a fast and challenging timeframe. A big reason for the success was the good and reliable cooperation with Comatec.” – Markus Flinckman, Oy HL-Metal Ab
