Ruth, Safety Engineer, Tampere, Finland
Ruth graduated from Tampere University of Applied Sciences in 2020 with a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree in Bioproducts and Process Engineering. During her studies, Ruth worked in the pulp, paper and energy industry, where she discovered that the safety and environmental side was where her heart really lies. With that in mind, Ruth continued her studies on the Master’s programme in Environmental Engineering Technology at Tampere University, studying safety engineering and a number of other topics.
– Towards the end of my studies, I was on the lookout for job vacancies in Tampere. Comatec seemed the ideal choice for me, as the position that was open would allow me to work in both safety engineering and environmental engineering. I was really excited at the prospect of being able to work on fascinating subjects that were important to me, without compromising, Ruth says.
At Comatec, Ruth is involved in safety services related to machinery, including risk assessments, conformity assessments and CE marking work. She also works in environmental services, providing environmental communication consultancy, greenhouse gas assessments and life cycle assessments. Cybersecurity in machinery design is also a big part of Ruth’s work.
– You learn and gain more experience every day with new projects, since new standards and other changes are constantly emerging. My work process management skills have also improved over time. All in all, I’ve developed hugely and gained a lot of professional confidence.
Ruth has appeared at events including the Subcontracting Trade Fair in Tampere, where she gave a speech on cybersecurity in engineering. That led to more requests for Ruth to speak at other events, getting the ball rolling nicely.
– The best thing about my job is the intriguing and challenging projects and development opportunities that are absolutely worth taking on. It’s really important to be able to develop and learn at work, and I think Comatec provides excellent opportunities for this. I also like the flexibility of the job and the freedom to work remotely.
Sometimes tricky situations can arise in new projects that she has no experience of, Ruth says, but help is always at hand. Colleagues are happy to help and provide encouragement.
– I have a great supervisor and wonderful workmates – we have a super working atmosphere. This is a job where you truly feel like you’re valued.
Ruth, what would you say to someone who’s considering a job at Comatec?
– I wholeheartedly recommend it! There’s never a dull day, and you get the chance to develop and learn in a fantastic environment.
